Product Description

Product Description

This classic collection of short stories serves as the ideal introduction to Steinbeck's work. Set in the idyllic Salinas Valley in California, where simple people farm the land and struggle to find a place for themeselves in the world, these stories reflect many of the concerns key to Steinbeck as a writer; the tensions between town and city, labourers and owners, past and present. Included here are the celebrated tales, THE MURDERER and THE CHRYSANTHEMUMS.

5.0 out of 5 stars These stories are brilliant, 13 Dec 2003
This compilation of short stories will not only entertain, but will reward repeat readings to no end. Also there are definate embrionic shapes of characters in his later works. For instance the story entitled Jonny Bear's titular character smacks of Lennie in OMAN. I'd recommend this book to anyone who has a passing interest in either Steinbeck or short stories

4.0 out of 5 stars Early short stories of life in Salinas Valley, 6 Mar 2002
By Mr William Finch (Crawley, West Sussex United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Even the most ardent Steinbeck fan would admit that these stories do not represent the pinnacle of the great man's achievements. But they certainly do not lack interest.
As you read the stories, you can almost sense Steinbeck's confidence growing, and it the reader can see the development of the characteristic Steinbeck "style".
In "The Snake" we meet a prototype of Doc from "Cannery Row" and "Sweet Thursday", and "The Raid" reads like an early working of "In Dubious Battle".
Anyone interested in Steinbeck, not to mention anyone interested in American social history, will find much to interest them in these pages.

4.0 out of 5 stars John Steinbeck earns his spurs., 5 Mar 2002
By Mr William Finch (Crawley, West Sussex United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Even the most ardent Steinbeck nut would not claim these stories to be his best work. But they are not to be missed.
Lovers of Steinbecks novels will find a lot to tickle their fancy here - a prototype doc from "Cannery Row" and "Sweet Thursday", an early working of "In Dubious Battle", and the genesis of the depiction of a working class California.
If you love "The Grapes of Wrath", "East of Eden", in fact any of the other great novels, give this book of short stories a go. You won't regret it
