Amazon.co.uk Review

Why, asks Timothy Garton Ash, in the introduction to Orwell and Politics, should we still read Orwell on politics? We know he was the writer who captured the essence of totalitarianism with Animal Farmand Nineteen Eighty Four but didn't that world end in 1989? How about the fact that he was probably the most influential political writer of the 20th century? Or the fact that he was "more memorably and influentially right than anyone" about the nature and threat of totalitarian regimes in the second half of the 20th century? Or that he had interesting things to say about socialism, fascism and liberalism; or on British imperialism; or the psychology of writers and intellectuals. These are good reasons to be sure but the clincher is because he is a master of the art of political writing. This is no small matter. Arthur Schoepenhauer said that the job of reviewer/critic is to use the judiciousness and severity of their judgement to mercilessly scourge all patchwork put together by incompetents and thus work against triviality and imposture as their duty dictates. If this collection of essays, reviews, letters and the complete Animal Farm contained only the classic "Politics and the English Language" it would be worth the asking price because after reading it one is much better equipped to spot crooked thinking and sloppy writing. By giving us a clear sight of some of the "swindles and perversions" of language Orwell makes it easier to expose ideologues and "spin-doctors" of every kind as well as providing us with some simple stylistic rules to help keep us honest. And that, as Garton Ash rightly says, is the best reason of all for reading Orwell on politics in the 21st century. --Larry Brown

5.0 out of 5 stars Satire Must Come From Somewhere...., 17 Aug 2002
By S. Granville - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Reading "Animal Farm" by itself can give you a sample of Orwell's thoughts on politics and the political culture of his day, but this book provides more than that. The editors have carefully selected letters, notes, essays, and other writings that contributed to the development of the story, as well as several other works that illustrate Orwell's keen political mind. All writers or potential should read his "Politics and the English Language"--it would save readers from having to slog through drivel in search of an original idea or two. ("Never use a long word where a short one will do"--sound advice for anyone!) This, and the other books edited by Peter Davison, are a must for any fan of Orwell's...even if you already own a copy of "Animal Farm".

5.0 out of 5 stars Great,but a bit suprising., 30 Sep 2009
By PygmyTwylyte (Citizen of the world) - See all my reviews
The material in this collection-"Animal Farm" plus selected journalism and book reviews-is great.Orwell, the anti-Stalinist socialist, the anti-imperialist patriot, born with a nose for sniffing out lies, hypocrosy and bowing before the repulsive dicators of the mid-20th century,is by far the best guide one could have to this era.The essay "Politics and the English Language" is worth the admission alone.
What suprised me was the choice of "Animal Farm" rather than "1984" as the main piece in the book."Animal Farm" is a great read indeed,a brilliant satire on revolutionary politics, specifically Stalinism, inspired by Orwell's narrow escape while serving with the POUM in the Spanish Civil War.He escaped, not from Franco's forces but from pro-Soviet Spanish communists.
Still, for all that, I think "1984" is bleaker and darker, probably as Orwell was dying while he was writing it.Given that the 20th century was the age of death, brutality, torture and state-sponsored mayhem in a way never previously seen in human history,I would say "1984" would suit this collection better than "Animal Farm".However, that's a quibble, all this material is well worth reading( and re-reading,and....)
