Product Description

Nobody has done more to chart American life through fiction over the last half-century than John Updike, and he is as much a master of the short story as of the novel as this collection proves.

John Updike was born in 1932 in Shillington, Pennsylvania, and since 1957 he has lived in Massachusetts. His novels have won the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and the Howells Medal.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to Updike, 21 Jul 2005

The first thing to note is that these Penguin 70th anniversary special editions are very nice little books. They are about the same size as a traditional Penguin but much thinner; they are much better than the previous anniversary editions that were so ridiculously small you lost them almost instantly.

There is no doubt that John Updike is a fantastic writer; his prose is succinct and often beautiful. My problem is that while I greatly admire him as a writer I find it difficult to engage with most of his subject matter. His obsessions with sex, faith and death in small town America rarely move me, a problem exacerbated by the fact that many of his sensibilities seem stuck in a previous generation (for example his attitude to women causes gives some readers serious problems).

This slim volume contains three beautifully written short stories all centred around journeys but, for me, it suffers from the same problem. I admire the stories, they really are fantastically well written, but they do leave me a little cold.

If you are unfamiliar with Updike's work then this is a good (and cheap) place to start - if you enjoy these stories it is likely that you will enjoy his other work. I would recommend starting with the Rabbit series - they are certainly the Updike books that I enjoyed the most.
