3.0 out of 5 stars Not a brilliant exemplar of his work , 13 April 2007
By Ruffian McRuffian (South London) - See all my reviews
The García Marquez volume of the Penguin Pocket series contains four short stories - `Seventeen Poisoned Englishmen', "I Only Came to Use the Phone", `The Woman Who Came at Six O'clock', `Light is Like Water'- none of which is over twenty pages in length. The stories are typical of Marquez's magical realist style, but lack the quality of many of his other works. The stories are worth reading if you love everything Marquez writes, but if you're looking for a light introduction to his work read 'No One Writes to the Colonel' or 'Of Love and Other Demons' instead.

Moreover, it's worth noting that three of the four stories from this Penguin Pocket volume are featured in Marquez's `Strange Pilgrims' (published by Penguin), while `The Woman Who Came at Six O'clock' appears in his `Collected Stories' (published by Penguin). Consequently, there seems little point in buying this diminutive text if you own the aforementioned books.
