Product Description

Product Description

Patagonia has thousands of miles of diverse and dramatic landscapes and micro-environments, sparsely populated by humans and rich in wildlife and natural wonders. This title takes the visitor through this land, from the South Atlantic coast via the Argentine steppe, to the Andes and lake districts on both sides on the Chilean and Argentine border to the fjords and glaciers of the South Chilean archipelago. The text offers the best of what to eat, what to see and where to stay, as well as the region's best buys. There should be something for everyone, from trekking to skiing and from mightlife to beachresortds.

From the Publisher

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting overview but no detail, 2 Jan 2005

I have just returned from a trip to Chile and spent around 2 weeks in Chilean and Argentine Patagonia. I bought this book because it was specific to Patagonia and also 3 for 2 in Waterstones!

It's an interesting and easy read with quite a lot of description, history and background. Although a slim volume, it's also nicely glossy with plenty of pictures, and the information I used seemed to be accurate. However, with my bad Spanish, there is no way I could have negotiated Patagonia confidently or planned my trip in any detail using just the information in this book. There was nothing much in the way of travel times between places, bus information or decent town maps, and the section on Chilean Patagonia is quite small.

Patagonia is a truly beautiful place to visit, but I would highly recommend borrowing this book from the library to get a feel for the region, and then buying the Footprint guides for Chile/Argentina to take with you.

3.0 out of 5 stars A format that's not well suited to blue sky country., 17 Oct 2009

This review is from: "Time Out" Patagonia (Paperback)
Firstly, the region of Patagonia covers nearly half a million square miles spread out across two countries - Chile and Argentina. A massive area. Any guide book worth its salt would therefore devote considerable space to travelling around such a wide space. While the Time Out guide to Patagonia contains an interesting history of the region it provides little help in the way of navigation. While this wasn't a problem for me [as I only visited one region of Patagonia on a weekend break from Buenos Aires] for anyone travelling around either Argentine or Chilean Patagonia - or to both across the Andes, it would be unhelpful.

Secondly, the sheer number of towns, lakes, national parks and other sights covered in this guide means that only a cursory summary of each one is contained here. So, while a lot of effort has gone into producing this glossy, modern guidebook, one has to question it's worth to the traveller - other than as a 'souvenir' of the trip.

For example, I visited Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi which I flew to from Buenos Aires. Despite the park covering nearly three hundred square miles and containing the towns of Bariloche, Villa La Angostura and Lago Nahuel Huapi itself, the guide devotes just over four pages to it. Disappointing to say the least. The local tourist office was far more useful.

I'm usually a big fan of Time Out guides but I feel that while their 'listings style' is well suited to cities [where sights, culture, shopping and nightlife are likely to be the traveller's main preoccupations] for the great outdoors there are much better guides.
