Time Out took their time to bring out an Athens guidebook, but the Olympics was too good an opportunity to miss and the long-awaited first edition finally came out in early 2004. They deserve credit for updating it and bringing out this second edition so quickly, and at the time of writing this is the only post-Olympics guidebook to Athens.

Unfortunately, there's ample evidence that this was a rush job - the book is riddled with errors and mistakes, and some of the photography is lacklustre. Nonethess, it still knocks the competition into a cocked hat.

The prevalence of local knowledge by local contributors has always been what makes Time Out unique, and as Athens is very much a city whose charms aren't immediately obvious, a little insider knowledge can help visitors get over 'Athens shock' and enjoy the Greek capital for what it is. If you really want to properly 'do' Athens - and it's worth it - then this is the best of the Athens guidebooks available and the only one that will help you truly get under the skin of the place.

The strong points of the book are that it covers a broad amount of information on greek customs and the travel information ,including using taxi's and trains, is indispensable. Good information is given on the strengths and history of the main tourist attractions and sights. Normally I find this sort of information very helpfull when I'm trying to see the best bits of a city in a short time. However if you have a long weekend in Athens and you can see everything you want to and still have time left over.

The weaknesses of using this book include the maps of the city. Although Athens is a confusing city to demonstrate in map form, the different district maps of the city presented within the book make it even more of a pain in the arse to find your way around (theres a lot of confusing and unreferenced page hopping).
The other limiting feature is that some of the restarants recommended have now closed.

Overall, useful but if theres a more up to date guide available
by the time you go think about using it instead.
