CARRIE'S WAR has sold more than 600,000 copies in Puffin in the UK alone

Product Description
As the bombs are falling, Carrie and her little brother are evacuated to Wales and billeted at the home of the bullying Mr Evans and his timid sister Lou. At first very unhappy, they discover great warmth when they visit Albert at Druid's Bottom, where they meet Hepzibah Green, who knows magical stories, and Mister Johnny, who speaks a language all his own. When things go wrong, Carrie takes things into her own hands, without guessing the awful consequences.

5.0 out of 5 stars A children's classic, 22 Feb 2002
By A Customer
I first read Carrie's War after it was published in the early '70's when I was about 10. I loved it and remember watching the TV dramatisation of it also which really mirrored the book. I am just discovering the book again after nearly 30 years and have bought it in England for my son as I have not been able to find it in America.
Nina Bawden really depicts what life was like for some WWII evacuees. The characters are unforgettable and the story is original and heartwarming. A must-read for every child.

4.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful war-time drama..., 3 Oct 2004
By A Customer
When first picking up this book, one often wonders whether it'll be alike some other books set in the time of war- bouncing bombs and explosions, ration books and evacuees- but it definately stands out in the crowd.

In it, we follow the intrepid Carrie and her brother Nick, evacuated to Wales until the war subsides as they are from London. As we turn these exciting pages, we meet many a wonderful character. The exciting Hepzibah Green and Mr Jonny, Albert, Mr Evans and Auntie Lou all make this piece of script a beautiful read of twists and turns that never end. It's well worth a look- better than most.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gripping story of two children evacuated to rural Wales, 25 May 2002
By A Customer
This was one of the most evocative books I have ever read detailing the difficulties faced by Carrie and Nick when evacuated to rural Wales and coming under the strict care of shopkeeper Mr Evans and his suppressed sister for whom the war provided a means of escape to freedom from her brother's tyranny. The book captures the children's feelings perfectly and it is easy to understand why young Carrie thought she was responsible for the fire by throwing the skull into the well. Of course as she grew older she knew that such things do not cause houses to catch fire but from a child's view it was perfectly plausible. Wonderful read for children and captures perfectly the difficulties and deprivations of war time.
