5.0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest kids books ever!, 10 Aug 2004
By Vagras (Seoul, South Korea) - See all my reviews
As a boy I could not get enough of this book. I still can't. The pictures are great, the characters are instantly understood and the simple rhyme commits to memory in seconds. What little boy would not want to be Officer Pugh saving the kids toys on Christmas eve? Although I definitely have a soft spot for Peg-Leg Horace, and the picture of him handcuffed round a tree.

As an adult I still talk to my Dad about this book and how much I enjoyed it when we read it together when I was little. And now as a dad-to-be, imagine then how happy I was when I received a new copy from my parents to read to my child when he or she is old enough (although I think it may have been sent for me rather than the baby)! It is solid gold and a must for any parent to get their kids reading and more importantly to enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fun for baby faced Billy through to Grandma Swagg!, 18 May 2003
By Toby Perkins (Chesterfield, UK) - See all my reviews
This is a quite wonderful children's book, introducing children to an important theme (good v evil) in an amusing & interesting way. The melodic nature of the verse and the exciting conclusion have led my five year old son to learn it off by heart teaching him many new words in the process, but alongside the educational benefits it is a story every parent will enjoy to read, secure in the knowledge that you will have the undivided attention of your audience. PS Grandma Swagg is still at large, it's not too late for a sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cops and Robbers, 13 Feb 2006
By james farquharson (Woking, Surrey United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
The rhyming narrative and the timeless, larger than life characters placed in a story that appeals to every child makes this book one of the greatest children's picture books of all time.
The image of a gang of robbers attempting to ruin Christmas being thwarted by the work of Officer Pugh is both funny and intriguing and will keep your child hooked to the end.
Once bought never forgotten (this is probably the only book i properly remember from my childhood) this is a book you'll be forced to read time and time again to your children but won't mind doing so.
