Product Description

Product Description

Begun in 1262 AD, Masnavi-ye Ma ‘navi, or ‘spiritual couplets', is thought to be the longest single-authored ‘mystical’ poem ever written. As the spiritual masterpiece of the Persian Sufi tradition, it teaches how to progress to the ultimate goal of the Sufi path - union with God. Jalaloddin Rumi was a poet and a mystic, but he was first a teacher; in these verses he draws the reader into the complexities of human love and separation and explains the path to divine love through the elimination of self-regard and worldly desires. Drawing on diverse sources from bawdy tales and fables to stories of the prophet Mohammed, these verses are brief in expression yet copious in meaning.

About the Author

Called 'Jelaluddin Balkhi' by the Persians and Afghans, Rumi was born on September 30, 1207, in Balkh, Afghanistan, then a part of the Persian Empire. He was the greatest mystical poet of Persia, famous for his didactic epic Masnavi-ye Ma'navi (Spiritual Couplets), a treasure-house of Sufi mysticism. Rumi died on December 17, 1273. Alan Williams is Senior Lecturer in Comparative Religion at the University of Manchester.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just an eye-opener, an ear-opener as well, 10 Dec 2008
By Kieran F. Johnston (Shah Alam, Selangor Malaysia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
In this review, I refer to the Naxos CD recording of the Spiritual Verses. My highest praise goes out to this CD; hearing these verses read aloud is light years more effective than reading ink squiggles on the page, especially with a gifted and effective reader like Anton Lessing. He animates the verses, and is sensitive to the shift in persona, voice, and tone in the verses.
I have transferred these four CD's to an iPod and I frequently listen to the spiritual verses, and let the meaning/beauty simmer slowly. These verses are astounding because they are perspective-shifting. They require slow pondering and gestation.
I highly and heartily recommend this recording to anyone who is receptive to fables and stories which burrow deep into the mind with endless and subersive tunnels. I disrecommend it for anyone who is in a hurry or wants to mult-task while listening. It will change your thinking about thinking.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb work, 7 Feb 2008
If you ever wished you could read Rumi in the original and so taste the true flavour of his teaching, here is a translation which, at last, will satisfy you. Without being pedantic or obscure, it allows the reader to discover Rumi undistorted and in all his power. Both brilliant and moving.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best poetic traslation of Rumi in English so far, 5 Oct 2006

This is the best poetic translation of Mathnawi of Rumi in English. I would recommend it to all lovers of Rumi. I am already looking forward for the next volumes.
