Product Description

Product Description
One of the greatest thinkers of the nineteenth century, Søren Kierkegaard (1814-55) often expressed himself through pseudonyms and disguises. Taken from his personal writings, these private reflections reveal the development of his own thought and personality, from his time as a young student to the deep later internal conflict that formed the basis for his masterpiece of duality Either/Or and beyond. Expressing his beliefs with a freedom not seen in works he published during his lifetime, Kierkegaard here rejects for the first time his father’s conventional Christianity and forges the revolutionary idea of the ‘leap of faith’ required for true religious belief. A combination of theoretical argument, vivid natural description and sharply honed wit, the Papers and Journals reveal to the full the passionate integrity of his lifelong efforts ‘to find a truth which is truth for me’.

About the Author
Rudyard Kipling, (1865-1936), English short-story writer, novelist and poet. Kipling was the first Englishman to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature (1907). His most popular works include The Jungle Book (1894) and the Just So Stories (1902), both children's classics though they have attracted adult audiences also.

(REAL NAME)
I could go on but this is an essential book for anyone interested in Kierkegaard (or not!)

The closest thing in existence to a (one volume) Kierkegaard autobiography.

Hannay's introductions and notes are helpful, especially if like me (when I read this book) you are pretty unfamiliar with Kierkegaard. Unfortunately the notes are at the back of the book resulting in A LOT of flicking backwards and forwards the first time through (to be fair pretty much all such books have the notes at the back. WHY?!?!? I know it's standard, but for any editors reading (as if): FOOTNOTES please!!!).

The translation is good. This is one of my all time favourite books and one I expect to reread again and again.
