Product Description

Product Description
Jennifer has a diary and Iolanthe doesn't. But Iolanthe does have a vivid imagination and a gift for writing stories. When she sees empty pages in Jennifer's diary, she can't help herself - they're clearly waiting for tales much more exciting than her friend's records of shop visits and weather. Iolanthe is so taken with the diary that soon sharing it is not enough and, eventually, she finds something to swop with Jennifer for it - extra stories to be available to order whenever Jennifer needs them.

About the Author
Anne Fine read Politics and History at Warwick and then became a teacher. Her first novel was published in 1975 and today she is one of the UK's most successful writers. She has won many awards, including two Carnegie Medals, two Whitbread Prizes and the Guardian Fiction Prize. GOGGLE-EYES was serialised on TV and MADAME DOUBTFIRE was made into MRS DOUBTFIRE, a hit Hollywood movie. Anne lives in County Durham. Illustrated by Kate Aldous.

5.0 out of 5 stars jennifer diary, 8 Oct 2003
I liked this book because it was easy to read unlike some over books. It was something you can read over and over again, but you will still be intrested on what will happen.I think this book will be sutible for age's 7-10.But Jennifer's diary could be read to children under 7 years of age. There is only one thing i did not like about it, it was to short.Anne fine i think you should do more stories about Jennifer like tracy beaker.

4.0 out of 5 stars A school story targeted at six to ten year olds., 27 Mar 2001
By A Customer
Jennifer's Diary is about two girls, Jennifer and Iolanthe.Jennifer has a very tempting diary with a rainbow cover and 365 shiny, blank pages. Unfortunately Jennifer's mind is as blank as the pages. She is greatly in awe of Iolanthe whose head is swimming with ideas to fill a diary. The trouble begins when when Iolanthe stumbles across the diary and completes January 8th with a tale of an heroic rescue by Jennifer. Anne Fine cleverly intersperses the narrative with wild imaginative diary excerpts written by Iolanthe. The book humorously spotlights the character of junior girls and makes it a delight to read by those who might recognise the traits within their own personality. The year three and four children at St John's thouroughly enjoyed sharing this book, picking up on inferences and predicting the outcome of many a tense moment. Iolanthe's vivid imagination inspired the children to write their own chapter stories. If only the same had happened for poor Jennifer!

1.0 out of 5 stars Hated it with a vengeance!, 28 Oct 2008
By C. Clark - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
My 9-year-old daughter was asked to read this book as part of her school reading homework. She found it very boring and dull. I admit that Annie Fine is not really her thing and that she prefers adventure stories.

However as a parent this book made me furious. It suggests to children that being manipulative and prejudiced against those they see as less intelligent than themselves pays off and is a perfectly normal way to behave. The amazon review above says the story is 'wickedly satisfying'. Well I don't get satisfaction from taking advantage of vulnerable people but obviously Annie Fine does. I do not recommend this book to any child of any age.
