5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing story of the twins who never gave up hope., 19 April 2001
By A Customer
War stories have always interested me and this is an absoloute classic of a book. It tells the story of the Peterson family who, in the event of WW2 try to flee their home country, wartorn Latvia. Astra and Hugo, 15 year old twins have an amazigly close relationship, and when Hugo disppears in the crush of the escape, Astra is devastated. She continues the journey with her parents, her younger brother Thomas and another family. However, no matter how far they travel, she refuses to forget her twin. Hugo in the mean time, finds refuge with a German family, and they become his family, but Astra never seems to far away. However over the course of 3 years, a relationship sowly blossoms betweeen himself and his new "sister" Bettina. They become betrothed and never wantto part. But when Astra finally finds her twin and brings him back to his family, he faces a difficult choice - who to stay with - and must search deep inside his heart to find where his loyalties really lie. This is an amazingly powerful novel, and will frequently leave you in tears. Read it, or you'll be sorry you didn't.
