5.0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly believable supernatural tale., 3 Dec 2000
By A Customer
The Changeover by Margaret Mahy is a fascinating tale of the supernatural and one that I thoroughly enjoyed. The story is interesting on two different levels. Firstly it deals with the love affair and coming of age of two teenagers, Sorry and Chant, and secondly it deals with the mysterious world of magic where witchcraft holds it's own - not entirely comfortable - place alongside the ordinary everyday life of school work, home problems and falling in love. As the story unfolds it seems to weave a mysterious spell - drawing the reader into a multi-layered plot that deals not only with adolescent sexual fantasy but also with the struggle of young people to find their own identities. As an older, though avid, young adult fiction reader, I have spent many hours searching the shelves to find stories as intriguing as this. Alan Garner's The Owl Service was the first book written in this vein to grab my attention. Since then I have found very few authors to match his brilliance at being able to mix the infinitely mysterious with the ordinary - but Margaret Mahy is perhaps one of those few, and in her I have found the perfect writer of believable supernatural tales. The Changeover is now definitely at the top of my list of favourites, and Chant's changeover into womanhood, her initiation into Sorry's world of white witchcraft and her terrifying struggle to save the life of her sweet little brother, Jacko, will always take pride of place amongst the works of fiction kept in my home.
