I read this book having watched the wonderful Robin Williams vehicle which was loosely based on it, (and, of course, a publicity shot from which appears on the cover of this edition).

Lest there be any doubt, because the cover of this book could be misunderstood as inferring that it is a novelised version of the film script rather than the original book, the Penguin edition, ISBN 0-14-036649-0 is the original Anne Fine novel and differs in material respects from the film version of "Mrs Doubtfire."

In its favour - the book is more realistic, and is still an amusing read, especially if you have not seen the film. It is competently written and some readers might actually prefer it to the Hollywood version.

In particular, what some people will like and others will not is that the characters are not nearly as nice or glamorous.

Some of my favourite parts of the film - such as the moment which explains where the name "Doubtfire" came from - turned out to have been added by Hollywood and are not in the book.

To me as someone who usualy greatly enjoys William's comic gifts, and did in this instance, I found that watching the film had spoiled me for the book - partly because it had given away the plot, partly because I didn't find it quite as funny as the film.

Nevertheless it is clever and original and many people will like this book.
