Product Description

Product Description

John Webster should have listened to his instincts: instead, he stays on in the Suffolk village where chance has taken him. Something is wrong here, and he finds himself with unanswered questions. Why is Derek so keen for him to stay on in the barn? Why are the villagers behaving so deferentially?

4.0 out of 5 stars A childrens book that an adult still loves!, 30 July 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Devil on the Road (Paperback)
The power that this book holds over me is increadable. Robert Westall has an amazing gift for storytelling that is surpassed by few. He is destined to be one of the greats.

When a storm catches our hero unawares he finds shelter in a ruined barn. With the locals reluctant to let him leave, and being very nice about it at that, he is catapulted into a terrifying chain of events that could save, or destroy, a young girls life. Matthew Hopkins will have his Witch, can he be denied?

4.0 out of 5 stars Tense tale makes a super read., 16 Jun 2001
By A Customer
The devil on the road makes for a tense read. A brilliant combination of mysticism, suspense and tension keeps the reader right on the edge of their seat. A motorbike rider drives around the country lanes of Suffolk and a storm breaks. He takes refuge in a field barn. A series of mysterious events leads him to believe that someone (or something) wants to keep him there . . . This mysterious beginning winds to a brilliant, devillish conclusion.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliantly told story - recommended, 27 Nov 2008
This is one of my favourite books. Beautifully plotted, suspenseful and atmospheric. There are many of Westall's usual themes and motifs in this story - motorbikes, cats, time travel, the supernatural. Rarely put together in such a charismatic, readable, wonderful way - one of his best.

4.0 out of 5 stars Westall - North East's best kept secret...
I thought this was a great book, great storytelling, characters and setting. I liked the way it mixed real stories and myths from the past into the present. Read more
