I was immersed in the book and could not put it down! I think this book is fantastic and would recommend it to children of all ages and abilities.
I loved this book and the way the author made me feel all the emotions the characters were feeling.
I feel quite sorry for Will as he gets smacked and that should never happen to anyone.
Young Willie Beech is evacuated to the country as London is being bombed in the Second World War. To start with he is really miserable but soon cheers up. He slowly begins to flourish as he is being looked after by old Tom Oakley; he new nothing could last for ever and his new found glee is ruined when an order from his mother, back in London, comes...

As a twelve year old I can highly recommend this book to another reader my age. The author really makes you feel for the characters. It is an emotional story that has you gripping to every page. It is suitable for both boys and girls. The story is about the relationships in William Beech's life. How it develops with Mr Tom and how it is created between his new friends in the country. But when he receives a letter from his mother, William's new fantasy world created by Mr Tom was all about to change. A classic story with a twist.

Despite the mountain of books about war available for this age group this book does not really fall into the category of 'just another of them'.

Goonight Mister Tom is a very special book which gets to the heart of the relationship between Willie and his guardian when Willie is evacuated to the country.

Willie has not been used to the normal things in life and when he meets Mister Tom he cannot come to terms with the special treatment that he receives - new clothes, friendship, good food and love.

After spending some six months with Mister Tom he returns home to visit his mum and is violently abused. Rescued by Mister Tom, Willie begins his life again. Mister Tom agrees to adopt Willie - the happy ending.

But there is more to this book, Michelle Magorigan manages to create a wonderful relationship between Willie and Mister Tom as well as a host of other characters in the book. The book does not end there. There are great descriptions about the war itself - an outstanding piece of literature and a must for every bookshelf.
