5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent historical drama that keeps kids hooked, 5 Mar 2001
This is my favourite of Mollie Hunter's childrens' stories. It is a historical adventure set against the bckground of 16th century Edinburgh and a plot involving the Scottish, English and Spanish nobility. The main character is a 15 year old boy. He is well written and believable. The book contains a lot of historical information presented in an exciting and stimulating way. As a teacher in a school for children with behavioural problems I read this story to a class of 11 year-old boys - and they loved it. One, a reluctant reader, insisted on re-reading it himself when we had finished! The plot can be understood on a number of levels which makes it suitable for reading to a younger child (8+) or for an older child (10+) or young adult to read alone. It is very well written, the action keeps on coming and the characters are developed. Ideal for children who like a bit of adventure with a historical twist, or anyone who wants to find out more about Scotland.
