5.0 out of 5 stars Catastrophic Catweazle, 29 Nov 2002
By Matthew Haverty (London, England) - See all my reviews
Catweazle (a failing 11th century wizard) has a horrid nightmare- 1 bad omen, and he hears an owl hooting in daylight- another bad omen. Just when things couldn't get any worse he and touchwood (his toad familiar) get chased through the woods by the Norman invaders, things looked hopeless. But he had one more card to play, his magic, though he couldn't usually get it to work, he tried to fly away to safety. And to his and his pursuers astonishment it worked, but not to the effect that he had hoped for, he flew through time instead of the sky.
Catweazle and touchwood find themselves in the 20th century, almost 1,000 years later in a barn, surrounded by a magic chariot (a tractor) and 'electrickery' ( electricity.) He befriends a boy called Carrot who feeds him leftovers and keeps him hid from his father Mr.Bennet, he also teaches Catweazle things about life in the 20th century like the sun in a bottle is in fact a light bulb. In the woods near the farm, Catweazle finds an empty water tank and makes it his hideout and re-names it castle Saburac.
This is a hilarious book telling the story of a magical misfit in the 20th century, anyone with a sense of humour will find themselves laughing out loud beyond belief.
