"'A remarkable book.... food is treated with reverence, with understanding and, above all, with care' - Sunday Times"

Product Description

'A remarkable book ... food is treated with reverence, with understanding and, above all, with care' - Sunday Times Full of authentic recipes, this richly evocative book describes some of the splendid regional cookery of France. The food of each area has its own particular flavour, derived naturally from local resources. FRENCH COUNTRY COOKING shows the immense diversity of the cuisine through recipes that range from the primitive peasant soup of the Basque country to the refined Burgundian dish of hare with a cream sauce and chestnut puree. There is also invaluable advice on suitable cooking utensils and the use of wine in the kitchen.

5.0 out of 5 stars You can taste the food as you read recipes and anecdotes, 13 Dec 2001
By A Customer
As with all of Elizabeth David's books, this is not a list of weights and measures, but of ingredients and expected results.
This is not a book for kids in a hurry, as you need to read it as a gastronomic autobiography first, and then go back and try the recipes.
In style it has the prose style of a "Miss Jean Brodie" with the "chuck in a bit of this and that" of Jamie Oliver! Above all she perfectly describes the robust tastes and smells of rural French cuisine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Traditional recipes from the saviour of english cooking., 1 Sep 2001
Elizabeth David's books have this incredible ability to send you to the supermarket. The recipes in French Country Cooking are exactly as the title proclaims simple peasant style country dishes.Yet as ever David wrote in a vivid but impatient style, almost demanding to know why we didn't eat in this hearty flavoursome style and what we were going to do about it.Do what i did ,buy the book and start cooking.
