The best guide to Brussels available, 12 Jun 2001
By A Customer
This is easily the best guide to Brussels available in the English language, essential for both visitors and residents. Why? Because it's written by people who live here. I am an English expat resident in Brussels for 4 years, and this is the one guidebook that I still use regularly. The peculiarity of Brussels is that many of the attractions are scattered around the city, rather than concentrated in the centre as in most other European cities. This guide is the only one that understands this fact, and takes you to many of the interesting sites, restaurants and bars in neighbourhoods that most tourists miss. The best thing about Brussels is the food and beer, and the restaurant recommendations are very reliable. This guide is updated every two years, so make sure you buy the most recent edition. It also includes a brief guide to other attractions in Belgium, including the city of Antwerp, which is the best-kept secret in Europe and only 40 minutes away by train. This guide is part of a series of 'Time Out' guides to cities throughout the world. They are consistently good. Incidentally, never buy a guidebook about Brussels (or anywhere else in Europe) published in the USA, unless you believe in cliches.
