5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book..., 16 Feb 2000
By A Customer
A love story but so much more too, 'Ancient Promises' is beautifully written, with a lightness of touch that effortlessly tells the painful and poignant story of Janu, a young Indian woman caught in a tangle of old and new ways. Hers is a story of great suffering and even greater fortitude; of the absence of love and of a love, deep and fulfilling; of believing in taking control of one's life yet fearing fate; of loyalty and betrayal; of family ties and the responsibilities they bring. I loved the intensity of the storytelling but I was also very glad of the author's wicked sense of humour. I found that Janu's story stayed with me for a long time after I had reluctantly turned the final page. This is a wonderful book and will, I feel sure, thoroughly engage the reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sacrifices we make for the HONOUR of the FAMILY !!!!, 15 May 2001
By A Customer
A great debut for Misra.....as there is a little of Janu in all of us. It is the story of a determined young woman in search of love and her independence. Her trials and tribulations was beautifully depicted as we were allowed to cry and laugh with her. It makes one reflects on their own decisions either through choice or honour as the consequences can be rewarding or heart breaking. It was hard to put this book down and it left one question in my mind.......what happened to my first love ? NOTE: It is more than a love story as it is life beautifully written.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant book. Highly recommended!, 15 Feb 2001
As an Asian woman, from Kerala, I can empathise with the story. This is one of the best books I've read. I enjoyed it more than 'God of Small Things'- also written by an author from Kerala. As an author-albeit of academic books- I would like to add that the book is very well written. I look forward to reading Misra's next book!!
