Amazon.co.uk Review
Ever since it quietly kick-started the collapse of the Soviet Bloc in 1989, Hungary and its vibrant capital city, Budapest, has remained slightly in the shadow of the other great eastern European capital cities, Berlin and Prague. Time Out's guide to Budapest confirms that if you want a city with a remarkable history, extraordinary architecture, cheap accommodation and bath houses to die for, Budapest has no competition. Situated on the banks of the Danube, Budapest is one of the most laid-back cities in the former eastern bloc, and has experienced a much less painful transition over the last few years than most eastern European cities. Time Out's Guide takes you through the rapidly improving museums and galleries, cool clubs, bars and restaurants, and also offers some sensible tips on how to negotiate the infamous difficulties of the language. Particularly recommended is its section on the city's marvellous Ottoman bath houses, which are a must for any visitor! --Jerry Brotton --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars WORK THROUGH THE CYNICISM AND YOU WON'T FIND BETTER, 15 Jun 1999
By A Customer
The main problem with being a publisher of a cosmopolitan guide is that: a. The subjects change faster than the book can be published. b. Attempting to be hip at every turn can be tiringly repetitive for the reader.

Notwithstanding, I used this book above all others in my first 3 months here to get around, and by and large it was accurate. I say by and large though as it is geared to the "Cappucino Warriors" of London rather than those who can accept what they see as a product of a society in transition.

Budapest is not an easy place to review: it is diverse and difficult to generalise but they really did do a good job in respect of the information breadth supplied, whilst keeping the physical width down to a manageable size! Plenty of information on entertainement, accommodation and peripheral interests such as late night cafe's, baths and the places NOT to go. Restaurant section requires some re-work and soon! These have sprung up at an incredible rate, and the newer ones are really quite superb.

Despite my distaste for the sometimes glib and introspective attitude of the reviews, this is probably the best you can get for a brief visit, or indeed as an introduction to this fantastic town for the longer term resident (Dead right about Becketts bar though!).

If you get any one, get this one.

2.0 out of 5 stars Time Out Budapest, 20 May 2004
By Owen Wilson "Owen" (London) - See all my reviews

A very disapointing guide to this great city. Most fundamentally, it is impossible to match the addresses listed for attractions with the extraordinarily useless map at the back of the book. Furthermore, the highly recommended restaurants and bars we visited bore no relation whatsoever to the descriptions in the book. Almost ruined our weekend, but not quite.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent guide book, 2 Mar 2009

We went last winter and this book was one of the best city guides I've ever come across. We intended to use it for restaurants/cafes some of the time and just 'fall in' to others but we found the ones it recommended so good we used it all the time.

I tried to get one for Krakow later but they don't do one!
