Product Description
Examines the problems facing modern Vietnam, a country emerging from its troubled past into a new world marked by conspicuous consumption and a lifestyle of leisure.

From the Author
A powerful and vivid account of Vietnam
In Shadows and Wind, Robert Templer paints a fascinating and fresh picture of a country usually viewed with hazy nostalgia or deep suspicion. Here is Hanoi, an increasingly tense and troubled city approaching its millennium but uncertain of its direction. Here are people emerging from a long wilderness of malnutrition, discovering a new lifestyle of leisure and luxury. And everywhere are the anomalies that burst the bubble of optimism: a vastly expensive luxury hotel sitting empty in an unknown town six hours from an international airport; museums crammed with fake exhibits. And there remains the one-party Communist state, still wrapped in secrecy and corruption, and making for an uneasy bedfellow with the rapacious capitalism it now encourages.

Drawing on hundreds of interviews in Vietnam and years of research, Robert Templer has produced the first in-depth examination of the problems facing modern Vietnam. Shadows and Wind is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the Vietnam that now has emerged from a century of conflict with both foreign powers and with itself.

"Groundbreaking. . . . In a convincing blend of colorful reportage and trenchant analysis, Robert Templer blows away the myths that have misinformed the world about this deeply troubled country."--Jeremy Grant, The Financial Times

"A meticulous and fascinating investigation.. . . For anyone interested in the real legacy of the Vietnam War, this book should be compulsory reading." --The Guardian

Some comments on the book from Vietnamese readers.

More important to me than the good reviews that this book has received has been the very positive reaction from many Vietnamese, in Vietnam and around the world, and from those who know the country well. Here are some extracts from letters I have received about the book.

"I would like to show my deep thanks for what you have done by writing an impressive book on Vietnam, where I was born and where I spent half my life before I came to the U.S some years ago. There are a lot of things worth talking about , but first and foremost, I am deeply struck by the authenticity of details which I felt everyday when I was in Vietnam but for many reasons, could not express them with such clarity and such quiet strength. I think that you achieved this because you are not a participant on any side during the war: You came to the site with virgin eyes, never polluted by any prejudices. But I also have a strong feeling that you lent a sympathetic ear to the small stories of ordinary people who are living with and against the strains of an existence which, to outsiders, seem to be in great harmony."

"After 23 years, I finally found a writer who really sees and understands the reality of Vietnam, especially that of today's, and describes it so eloquently."

"I've just finished reading the two excerpts from Shadows and Wind published in Destination Vietnam, and I find it the best writing on modern Vietnam I've seen. Really terrific. I'm looking forward to the book with great anticipation. I'm sure my wife, a native of Hanoi, will appreciate it as well." --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book, 18 Feb 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Shadows and Wind (Paperback)
I've just got back from a trip to Vietnam where I read this book. I found it gave me enormous insights in the country that you just cannot get from other books. I wanted to know more about Vietnam than what happened during the war and this book explains so much about why the country is where it is today. It can be a depressing read -- this is a country with a lot of problems -- but it is a great source of new information and vividly written stories. There is great information on the country's culture, religion, writing, food and history. It tells you so much more about the country as it is not seen through the prism of war but through the Vietnamese people themselves. I'd recommend it for anyone travelling to Vietnam or anyone interested in the history and culture of this country.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent account of Vietnam, 19 Aug 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Shadows and Wind (Paperback)
This is an excellent account of Vietnam, better than any of the other books on this subject out there at the moment. It is packed full of information, brilliantly and amusingly written, entertaining and informative. It is a tough critical look at a government but it is affectionate and warm towards Vietnamese people. Great chapters on food and literature.

4.0 out of 5 stars Extremely comprehensive, if a little one-sided, 16 Aug 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Shadows and Wind (Paperback)
The book is superbly researched. Bob Templer knows his stuff. It is crammed with information both on the byzantine web of politics, and the myths, philosophy and culture that makes Vietnam tick. I will need to read it again for sure. My only criticism is that it is very negative. There is clearly much justification for this....no complaints there. However I wanted to know what the man on the street thought about it all. The lack of this side led to a somewhat imbalanced read. I couldn't help thinking that Bob Templer had had an extremely frustrating time as a news correspondent in Vietnam, trying to get information. A near impossible task I'm sure. Congratulations to him for sticking it out for 4(?) years. Was this book a way of taking out his frustrations?

Overall it's excellent. Read it if you have anything to do with Vietnam.
