Product Description

Product Description

This work traces the history of hypnotism from its beginnings as "animal magnetism". It begins with a detailed description of Anton Mesmer's 1774 discovery and recounts the story of his life. The major alterations in Mesmer's theory made by a variety of early pioneers, including the supposed paranormal powers possessed by somnambulists, are then examined, with a fuller account of the tragedy of John Elliotson than has appeared elsewhere. James Braid's coining of the term "hypnotism" to replace "animal magnetism" introduces the modern era, and after an appreciation of Braid's work the dramatic demonstrations in Charcot's Clinic are described, with the subsequent exposure of his errors by Bernheim and others. The book concludes with an account of the therapeutic and experiment work of the 20th century and the practical ways in which hypnotism is being employed today.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting insight to the history of Hypntism, 5 Oct 2001
I found the book extremely well researched ,I read the book from cover to cover, having read over fifty books on hypnosis i found the well informed style captivating .though the end did seem a little rushed or overedited the balance being tipped towards the early 17/18th century .

2.0 out of 5 stars More like a history of Mesmerism: very misleading..., 14 Feb 2001
As a kind of academic history of Mesmerism, this book is very interesting, informative and readable. About threee quarters of the book deals with Mesmerism which is really a precursor of hypnosis. The title is therefore misleading, by no means could it be considered a history of hypnotism. The historical tone of the book will potentially mislead the reader into accepting many of the empirically false theories which are discussed. Ther is some critcism of the theories discussed but more would be required to give the book a balanced perspective. A recent international poll of professional hypnotists showed that by far and away, Dave Elman and Milton Erickson were considered to be the most influential men in the history of hynpotism. Forrest gives Erickson about a page and does not mention Elman even once...
