5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, moving, dark, 3 Jul 2001
By A Customer
Funny, moving, truthful surprising story of rivalry and friendship between adopted sisters. Always has a new surprise. Humane, but with a dark undercurrent. Look out for the descriptions of the heroine's French exchange's family.

2.0 out of 5 stars Skin-and-bones characters, 19 Jun 2001
By A Customer
The author seems enchanted with the physicalities of the world she's created in this book and gives wonderful detailed descriptions of them. The people that inhabit the world however, are as one-dimensional as possible in a novel of this length. Ruth is 'loyal' (read: the good one), her brother 'odd', father 'distracted', aunty 'intellectual' and to Victoria, alas, falls the 'bad guy' hat. Given this childishly simple view of human nature, it's no wonder that the antagonist's values and morality flip in mind-boggling manner. No matter though, by the end of the book you won't much care if Victoria dies of cancer, if Ruth finds happiness with her paper fiance or what happens to Victoria's vaporous child. The eggshell-people are easily forgotten (try closing the book) but you will remember the loving description of the rectory.

5.0 out of 5 stars An exceptional novel....highly recommended, 30 Nov 2000
By molke@retemail.es (Barcelona. Spain) - See all my reviews
The power of this novel creeps up on you as the story of two cousins, brought up together as the result of a tragic accident, progresses from childhood through the teenage years and into adulthood. The relationship between steadfast, loyal Ruthie and the beautiful but disturbed Victoria is grippingly portrayed against a very satisfying backdrop of characters and places. This is a wonderful, highly readable novel with a powerful storyline perceptively written- highly recommended!
