4.0 out of 5 stars An honest opinion of the land and himself, 16 April 1999
By A Customer
The book is separated into one chapter for each month. The first-time reader would be forgiven for thinking that the author is unnecessarily limiting himself in this way, that some months are bound to be more eventful than others. However, Viney has successfully avoided this constraint by filling each chapter with delightful detail; spinning tales from Irish folklore, hearsay and personal experience. He writes candidly of his short-comings while he and his wife ascend a steep learning curve, turning from city dwellers to country bumpkins. He tells us of how he has adapted to the hard realities of fending for oneself but enthuses about it all too.

Viney has created a very tempting portrayal of his life in the West of Ireland and the readers that are familiar with his newspaper writings are advised to read this book.

Every now and then the densely descriptive passages became a little overbearing and require careful reading but these are scarce. The style is a cross between a folk tale, a report and a diary and Viney has blended the three perfectly.

It is a long time since I have read a book from which I felt I have learnt something. Viney enlightens, entertains and is a brilliant captivating writer.
