4.0 out of 5 stars Great book to "Get out of London" and catch up with friends, 23 May 2002
This book is great for someone (like me) who has moved to London and needs to get out and see the country side at least every 2 weeks. I found the walks a great way to catch up with friends who live all over London. All meeting at the station and walking, chatting and catching up on news with the pub lunch a great idea, AND FRESH AIR!. An ideal day out in the weekend thats cheap. The book has heaps of varied walks, but the book's directions actual over complicate the route. Good "English" pub recommendations for a foreigner to enjoy and some landmarks to visit.
Well worth the tenner it costs!
PS If you want peace, avoid doing the same walk as the Walkers Club on the same weekend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Walks within easy reach from London., 10 Jan 2000
By A Customer
Great walks within easy reach by train from London, leading you over public foothpaths and bridleways and hardly any roads. Gives you a great opportunity to discover different sceneries throughout the English countryside. Although directions are accurate most of the time, it is advisable to buy the walking maps as mentioned with each walk in the book, as some of the signage has changed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Walks are varied and graded for toughness out of ten., 1 April 2002
By C V PREECE (London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I have only begun these walks, starting with the easiest. The first I did was up in Essex (Wivenhoe) and involved taking the ferry across the River Colne (and getting back before the last return crossing). Lots of birdlife. On that walk I met other people doing the same walk, so I guess I'd timed it with suggested Saturday Walkers' Club dates, but otherwise I go any day. In the middle of one Winter when the country was under flood alert (!) we did the walk from Garston to St Albans which was so beautiful, through woods (saw deer), beside streams, over fields (a fox), etc and was so surprised to be out in the country and yet so close to "civilisation". Charming. Another down to Hants, along the River Test valley. We chose to take the train back from Romsey to Dunbridge where we'd left the car, and this was so cute - only one carriage! Next we're doing the one around Oxford in May, as suggested, to catch the buttercups. Then we progress to Level 2 for toughness! I'm particularly impressed with the variety of scenery these walks cover, and that they can be done in a day, including trains to and from Central London. Included are details on where to eat/drink which is jolly handy too.
