4.0 out of 5 stars An entertaining read without pomp or condescension. Enjoy., 30 Jun 1999
By A Customer
A riveting study of the mirky underworld of early 18th century London with lots of fascinating titbits concerning everyday Georgian life. It is liberally peppered with hilarious contemporary engravings which add to the whole atmosphere. My only criticism is that on the rare occasion Lucy confuses certain celebs with others, although only the most uptight pedants would notice and this detracts little from her colourful narrative. If you want to learn about the REAL inspiration for Dickens' Fagin and Oliver Twist then read this.
