3.0 out of 5 stars Gems and what-else-can-you-do in an airport, 7 April 2001
By Finn Agger "finnagger" (Denmark) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Some of her short stories are among the best, others are not. In the first category you have the gothic 'The Children of Grupp' - a study of how it is to be "stuck" in your class - as chilling as its metaphor. Then there are the middle-class do-gooders' nightmare when the call for charity is heeded in 'The Cats' Meat Man' and (of course) 'Season of Goodwill' (what Christmas is about ?!). Another polite woman gets herself quite an experience in the border-line Balkans of 'The Slovenian Giantess'. Quite a skeleton that one is. Then there are the clarinettist and the bride's aunt (in the namesake) where the statistician in the guise of a jazz musician meets old love and the talk of marriage&love has its hidden agenda. Sweet. And the rest? Well, if the stories are rather predictable, the author's language is always a treat where the eye for illustrative detail find its expression in idiomatic English and you will know what a foreigner envies
