4.0 out of 5 stars Lively puts you right in the action, 6 Mar 2001
By A Customer
Penelope Liveley is one of those rare writers where the structure of the novel falls away and you as a reader seem to co-exist with the central characters. This immediacy is one that few writers manage- David Lodge, a very different writer perhaps, masters the same effect. In HeatWave, Pauline, a book editor and main character, senses her daughter, who is living next door,is going to suffer the same sort of marital betrayal and she herself once experienced. It is all set in two adjacent cottages in the middle of a field somewhere in an unusually baking hot English countryside. The plot sort of simmers until there is a somewhat uncharacteristically dramatic ending for Lively at least. But Lively novels are not sold on her plots but on her realism. You could be there in the kitchen reading the Saturday Telegraph and listening to Radio 4 while it all unfolds. It would be so easy to bypass Lively as an author just for slightly middle class, slighlty intellectual women. You would be the poorer for doing so.
