Product Description

Product Description

A novel about an 18th-century sex therapist, which concerns the nature of the beauty myth and male/female perspectives of history. It opens with the ageing Lord Vermilion telling us that he is about to introduce us to the diaries of the now-dead Emilia and that they are "indecent" for the fair sex.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a completely astounding, LIFE-CHANGING story!, 29 Oct 1998
By A Customer
This is an amazing debut from a very talented writer. This is the kind of book that you will remember forever - full of passion, deception, intrigue, and a good old dose of true love! If you think Wuthering Heights was good, wait till you get hold of this. The characters are so well written, complex and REAL that they could just walk off the page! The two main characters Emilia and Vermilion completely draw you into their world. I laughed at the good bits, cried at the sad and hissed at the villains......this novel is truly a tale worth reading. MORE! MORE!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable, 4 Dec 2008

This review is from: The Temple of Hymen (Hardcover)
This was a thoroughly enjoyable book, clearly written by someone who has studied the art of writing, which is my only criticism. The writer tries too hard to create a masterpiece. Having read her second book it is clearly evident that she has no need to try, Jacqui Lofthouse is masterful in her depiction of people and places. I shall be reading both again.
