Product Description

Product Description

The aim of this text is to offer an introduction to the underlying principles of non-Western music and to encourage the reader to explore rich and fascinating sounds and rhythms from around the world. Otto Karolyli covers the traditional music of five continents, namely Sub-Saharan Africa, the Islamic world, the Indian subcontinent, China and Far East. Each chapter examines the rhythm, melody, harmony and instruments of the region's music, plus elements of the culture which contribute towards an appreciation of the music, such as religion, poetry, drama and dance.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not so bad considering the price., 1 Jul 2005

This book is full of facts about musical instruments and styles from around the world. It's not an expensive book, and only has simple line drawings. It tries to cover too great a geographical area in one small publication. Information is about 95% accurate, and by no means complete, with whole countries being completely missed out.
However, for the price, this is ok as a general reference, with many useful examples of scales and tunings.

1.0 out of 5 stars This book is very poor indeed., 15 Oct 1999

There is no new material in this book. Karolyi's approach is also very dated, and probably racist in its desire to portray Africans as all body but no mind and Chinese as hermaphrodites.

As a professional in the field of world music education, I cannot "dis-recommend" this book strongly enough. It should never have been published. It might be useful to people who wonder why we should study world musics, but only as a negative example of the problems that an uninformed author can get into.
