5.0 out of 5 stars Snow's writing is truly captivating., 12 Nov 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Red Star over China (Paperback)
Snow truly did Sinology a tremendous favor when he ventured into the soviet area years ago. Red Star Over China stands as an archetypical example of "pre-TV" journalism at its finest. Snow's captivating writing style allows the reader to truly feel as if they are riding along with the "red bandits" as they move through the hills of China conducting guerilla warfare. What Snow has to tell us about Mao, is as fascinating as anything that has been brought up about him in the post-Mao era. I would recommend this book to anyone, it is not just a history book, it, in itself is a part of history, truly a classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truthful, a must read for Chinese watchers, 30 Mar 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Red Star over China (Paperback)
After growning up in China and having alot, yes ton of Communisim influence, it was not till I was 13 years old, yes that was 1997, I had a look at the Chinese edition of the book. The book is written in a Communist perspective, but it was also true. I thought it was much better than some of the other books decribing China's civil war that came from the Chiang's persepective, but ofcource, Chiang's army was decayed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Account of the Chinese Revolution, 7 Oct 2009
By R. Chang (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought a copy recently and re-read it and found it to be just as absorbing as when I first read it some 30 years ago. I also recetly acquired the DVD of the musical East is Red first performed in Beijing in 1965. I found it to reflect the account of the Chinese revolution by Edgar Snow, which is a classic akin to Ten Days that Shock the World the claasic account of the Russian Revolution. I would recommend the book to anyone who wishes to acquire a good background of the Chinese revolution and to understand where modern China has come from.
