Product Description

Product Description

A comprehensive, scholarly accessible study, in which the authors draw upon poetry and mythology, art and literature, archaeology and psychology to show how the myth of the goddess has been lost from our formal Judeo-Christian images of the divine. They explain what happened to the goddess, when, and how she was excluded from western culture, and the implications of this loss.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of the underlying myth of all myths, 2 Nov 1997
By A Customer
This book gives follows the evolution of man's religious beliefs from the Paleolithic to modern day Christianity. It is filled with concrete examples of archeological findings and artifacts and attemps (succesfully) to describe them from a psychological point of view. The style is clear, easy to read, although some of artifact descriptions have somewhat far fetched interpretations. However, this book not only gives the reader a great historical overview of ancient civilizations and insight into their cultures, but shows quite conclusively the unifying (and underlying) link of the myth of the Great Goddess with all "future" mythologies. I highly recommend it, be it for personal enlightment or simply to gain a new world outlook.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply excellent. Catalyses feminine power!, 5 Jan 2000
By stephsim@usa.net (Northern Ireland) - See all my reviews
I read this book over four years ago - borrowed it from a library and could never find it again in bookshops. Imagine my delight to see it on Amazon! A must read for any woman who wants to retrace the hidden history of feminine spirituality. Throughly reserached with LOADS of great pictures, iconography and drawings. Not five stars - but six!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An indispensible overview of The Goddess throughout time, 9 Jan 2008
By P. Donovan "cultural jackdaw" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The research and dedication that has gone into examining the development of how 'The Goddess' has been perceived and worshipped, is breathtaking.
However, this is far from a 'dry' academic read: the illustrations and the scholarship sweep you along the journey of 'The Goddes' from the Paleolithic era to the shadows that hang around The Virgin Mary in Catholicism. You can either read about a particular goddess or culture or just read chronologically with equal pleasure. This is an incredible journey for us all.
