Product Description

Product Description

A complete collection of the short stories in Wodehouse's Blandings series, introduced by one of Britain's favourite comic writers. The volume comprizes all the stories from "Blandings Castle", "One From Plum Pie", and "One From Nothing" series.

About the Author

Pelham Grenville Wodehouse was born in 1881 in Guildford, the son of a civil servant, and educated at Dulwich College. He spent a brief period working for the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank before abandoning finance for writing, earning a living by journalism and selling stories to magazines. An enormously popular and prolific writer, he produced about 100 books. In Jeeves, the ever resourceful 'gentleman's personal gentleman', and the good-hearted young blunderer Bertie Wooster, he created two of the best known and best loved characters in twentieth century literature. Their exploits, first collected in Carry On, Jeeves, were chronicled in fourteen books, and have been repeatedly adapted for television, radio and the stage. Wodehouse also created many other comic figures, notably Lord Emsworth, the Hon. Galahad Threepwood, Psmith and the numerous members of the Drones Club. He was part-author and writer of fifteen straight plays and 250 lyrics for some 30 msical comedies. The Times hailed him as a 'comic genius recognized in his lifetime as a classic and an old master of farce'. P. G. Wodehouse said, 'I believe there are two ways of writing novels. One is mine, making a sort of musical comedy without music and ignoring real life altogether; the other is going right deep down into life and not caring a damn … ' Wodehouse married in 1914 and took American citizenship in 1955. He was created a Knight of the British Empire in the 1975 New Year's Honours List. In a BBC interview he said that he had no ambitions left now that he had been knighted and there was a waxwork of him in Madame Tussauds. He died on St Valentines Day, 1975, at the age of ninety-three.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comparison with 'Blanding's Castle' (published by penguin), 15 Feb 2006
By C. A. Caddick "PSCaddick" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
After discovering the joys of PG Wodehouse last year I became a dedicated fan and started hunting out every book I could. I got to a bit of a dilema when trying to choose between this book and 'Blandings Castle', another volume of short stories published by Penguin, containing 5 Blandings stories, 1 Bobbie Wickham story and 5 Mulliners of Hollywood stories, whilst 'Lord Emsworth Acts for the Best' contains 8 Blandings stories. I initally chose 'Blandings Castle' and was given the second volume at a later date. I am ecstatic that I was. Whilst both books are brilliant 'Lord Emsworth...' contains the real gem of Wodehouse's short stories: 'A Crime Wave at Blandings', which is the funniest thing I have ever read and is a great example of Wodehouse's genius, I would therefore recommend buying both books (or getting people to buy them for you!) because whilst 'Blandings Castle' at first seems to be greater value for your money with its amount of stories (which, don't get me wrong, are great) any true Blanding's fan will love 'Lord Emsworth Acts for the Best' just for its extra 3 stories, especially 'A Crime Wave'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 14 Nov 2004
By RCC (Scotland) - See all my reviews
P.G.Wodehouse in sparkling form with a collection of very enjoyable and amusing stories centred around the bumbling Lord Emsworth. Wodehouse's story-telling throughout the book is a joy to experience as he deftly conjures tales of mischief and mishap. A real uplifter!

This book was excellent. A fine collection for someone relatively new to Blandings. I'll be looking for more of the same, very soon.
