4.0 out of 5 stars The best omnibus P.G Wodehouse ever wrote, 18 May 2001
By A Customer
Apparently P.G.W was accused of writing books that contained all the usual characters, just under different names. After reading this, you will understand why, but as its only very minor characters that are affected, it really doesn't matter. The presence of Psmith makes up for any shortcomings this book may have. I've heard that Psmith was actually based on a real person, which is actually quite scary. I think after reading this book, most people will agree that Psmith is one of the best characters Wodehouse ever wrote - at times he makes Jeeves look slow, which is quite something. All three storylines are up to, or above Wodehouse's usual standard, and in general it is very well worht reading. Buy it. What more can I say?

5.0 out of 5 stars Unputdownable, 13 Jul 2005
By A Customer
If you've never met Psmith before, prepare to be bowled over by his charming, slightly louche, somewhat ridiculous personality. He's got a moral code and it is amusing and touching to see it tested and strained by the silliest of events. Wonderful Wodehouse in his prime.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simply (Almost) the Best!, 17 Jul 2004
By C. Stewart "The Cat's Whiskers" (Yorkshire/Derbyshire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The World of Psmith (Hardcover)
The only reason I've given 4 stars not 5 is that this contains the weakest in the Psmith series, "Leave it..." which PGW only wrote at the request of his beloved step-daughter Leonora, who loved the characters. Psmith vies with Jeeves as the best of PGW characters and already the superb wit shines through in almost every book. What makes the series so good is that they are more autobiographical than PGW other works. "In the city" is PGW nightmarish experience at a London bank, and he worked as a journalist as well as a writer. NB - alone of PGW characters, Psmith is a real person, not a composite of PGW battalions of relatives: Psmith = Lucas D'Oyly Carte, son fo the famous Savoy theatre man, and he died young. See my article The Initimitable Wodehouse at www.cd.stewart.btinternet.co.uk for a potted biography of Wodehouse and his characters.
