5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, 22 Dec 2000
By A Customer
Very, very funny. The problem with Will Self is that he cannot write without being ultra-ironic and cool, but here it works. The stories (2 novellas), about a woman who grows a penis and rapes her husband, and a man who develops a vagina, could have been merely vulgar in the hands of a lesser writer. But Self writes with such linguistic variety, panache and humour that he lifts these stories to the level of highly intelligent satire. They are shocking, obscene and hugely enjoyable (plus they make some very interesting observsations about gender along the way).

4.0 out of 5 stars Challenges sex role expectations!, 30 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Cock and Bull is disturbing in a comforting way!? It is powerful literature as it destabilses classical narrative expectations and at the same time demonstrates how traditional sex roles have become unstable in our society. The protagonist in Cock represents the contradictions of gender roles in our society and instead of resolution, there is regression...A compelling read for the open-minded...

This is the first one of Will Self's books that I have read and I probably will not be reading any more if his others are anything to go by. Read more
