Product Description

Product Description

Tracing a year in the life of an Umbrian village, this book shifts month by month through the seasons and the social rites of people. Side by side with the celebrations of particular saints' days, the accompanying banquets, the dances, processions and the cultivation of the land upon which the area has long depended, the author describes the restoration of the huge, dilapidated palazzo she and her family occupy. Between the purchase of the villa and her daughters's wedding party a year later, there is an account of life in Umbria as it is lived by the Italians. This proceeds from the last weeks of February and March when the vines are pruned, through the sowing of the tobacco plants, capsicum peppers, sunflowers and corn and their harvest in October. Then there is the gathering of the olives and chestnuts which takes place before the winter feasts set in, followed by the bitter but beautiful winter, when so many villagers are unemployed until the farming begins again.

4.0 out of 5 stars How to move to Italy in the Grand Style, 11 Jun 2001
By A Customer
This is a book that demonstrates how much courage you need to start a new life, particularly when you are not a mid lifer, but young enough to take all of your children with you and decided to move to Umbria lock, stock and barrel. Consequently this is an engaging book and we are in awe of the obstacles and challenges that are overcome to rebuild the Palazzo, and to a lesser degree to be accepted by the people of Umbria. The many characters are beautifully drawn and the author is completely fascinated by them as well as the glorious Umbrian landscape. A charming if somewhat eccentric style of writing, but I heartily endorse this book to anyone who has the remotest interest in life away from the tourist hordes in Italy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Valley in Italy, 11 Nov 2005

(REAL NAME)
I thought this book was great. Written with a real affection for the wonderful characters who welcome the author and her family into their village, it is entertaining but also accurate. Having helped a friend restore an Italian house, this account of rural italian life really rang true. The style may be eccentric, but that's part of its success and I was sad to reach the end of this life-enhancing book.

5.0 out of 5 stars So much better than Mayes, 25 April 2000
By A Customer
If you want to read about renovating a house in Italy and about (real) life in an Italian country village this is so much more engaging than the tedious bestsellers by the self-absorbed Frances Mayes.

Book as described. Rather slow delivery, but that may have been due to Postal strikes in some parts of the country.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really good feel-good book.
I received this book as a present. Once you get past de Teran's quirky character traits, such as the way she calls her daughter, underneath lies a book full of good feeling and... Read more
