5.0 out of 5 stars Fantasticly moving. A book that everyone should read., 10 Aug 1999
By A Customer
I first read this book about 4 years ago and sobbed my way through the final accounts written by men who had fought at the front. It's not all doom and gloom! It is a funny, truthful and sometimes painful account written by the men who served at the front. It isn't untill you read a book like this that you can truely appreciate what was going on not only on the front, but the reception these veterans recieved upon their return to Britain. I would love to see this book on the curiculem list for every senior school for maybe then everyone one would remember just how much we owe to our "brave and valient boys".

5.0 out of 5 stars Poignant and moving study, 26 Jul 2000
By A Customer
One of the best books on the Great War you can buy. Profoundly moving, particularly towards the end when the soldiers returned home and the sections on the cemeteries. Even more so now as more years have passed and more old soldiers have passed on.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Compelling Account, 9 Jun 2004
By PD (UK) - See all my reviews
I cannot believe the French reader's comments! This has to be one of the definative books on life at the front during WW1. It also happens to be written in a sensitive and understated style which suited me perfectly. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book on the First World War
Denis Winter's book is a million miles from the A J P Taylor histories that I used at school. Understated, it takes its premise that the experience of the soldier in war is... Read more
