(REAL NAME)
Inexplicably out of print these days (but available second-hand through Amazon), this is Ms Chambers's first novel. Written in New Zealand (though mercifully this is not apparent in the writing) at the end of the Thatcher era, it is - on one level - a straightforward enough tale of college life, as four chums make the final dash to Finals and the future. In fact it's much more than this. The characters are exquisitely drawn and their thoughts and motivations set out in fine - and often hilarious - detail. These people are inconsistent and uncertain, and all the more realistic for being so. As always with Ms Chambers, it's the small observations that make you smile or wince (often both) and the set-piece big scene, which is such a characteristic of later works, sees its beginning here too.

Nearly twenty years on, has it aged well? Yes. If you'd read this when it first came out, you'd have thought that it was the beginning of a highly successful career, promising beutifully drawn and achingly funny novels of observation and insight. And do you know what? You'd have been right.
