Oh no! Not again!!, 6 Feb 2005
Imagine for a moment a book of "whodunits" in which, at the end of every single story, it is revealed that "the butler did it!"Thankfully this is NOT the case in this collection of eighteen stories by Margery Allingham. But there is a recurring ending to a number of these stories which makes one want to shout out : "Oh no! Not again!!" And this is perhaps the main criticism of this book - the number of similar plot devices - they do get irritating, especially since the particular repeated plot device is so silly and unbelievable. However, along with the "daft" stories there are a number of very entertaining stories. Despite the title, Miss Allingham's usual hero, Mr Campion, appears in only three of the tales - "Mr Campion's Lucky Day", "The Unseen Door" and "The Man With The Sack" - and these are among the best in the book. Another good story is "The Pioneers", which is about an unusual incident in a failed marriage - very nicely done. "Publicity" is a well-written story of an ageing actor who finds himself in an interesting predicament. Both of these stories include an element of suspense - wondering how the plot will turn out. My favourite is probably "A Quarter of a Million" - a well-paced, straightforward crime story. There is also a good little chiller at the end of the collection - "The Wink". Margery Allingham is a very gifted story-teller and there are enough "goodies" in this book to balance the criticism mentioned at the start. bob
