There were about three occasions when this book made me smile and the rest of the time I found it painful to read. It didn't go anywhere and it didn't really have anything to say. It was the first time I found myself comparing a book to a television programme and the book coming off worst. This book was written before the tv programme was made and the main characters have none of the goofy charm that made the tv characters so lovable despite their filthy habits and hideous life style. The book had no such redeeming features and it was a blessing when it ended.
