4.0 out of 5 stars How Families Hurt., 27 Oct 2001
By A Customer
Sanity, Madness and the Family provides a series of case studies in which schizophrenia is examined from the social perspective where the authors seek to understand the family dynamics that lie behind this illness. The families of the individuals are interviewed in a variety of combinations so that the apparently meaningless behaviour and delusions of the schizophrenic are placed in a context which is meaningful and relevant to her. In this process it is possible to see how family alliances and defences are built up and protected, sometimes over generations, at the expense of individuals. The case studies examine the discrepancies between verbal statements made by family members and their non verbal communication with each other and the ill member of the family; which then lock that member into a situation that is hard to break out of. it shows how we as individuals can be unwilling to confront harmful issues.
The main weakness of the book is that all of the case studies are women. Although a follow up is not in its remit the reader is left wondering what happened to the women who participated in the studies. A fascinating read for those who wish to communicate authentically and examine the challenge to traditional psychiatry in the sixties.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb study of the schizophregenic family environment, 11 Aug 2009
By Mr. D. Lambert (South Hertfordshire, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I would recommend reading The Divided Self: An Existential Study in Sanity and Madness (Penguin Psychology) before reading this as the understanding from The Divided Self will make the content of Sanity, Madness and the Family far more meaningful, vivid and relevant.

This book if read without the context of the other will not make as much sense. It gives case histories of diagnosed schizophrenics and examines the environments that they existed at home in by interviewing parents and siblings. The book shows such an amazing correlation between home environment and schizophrenia that it is hardly surprising that some have concluded that schizophrenia is a hereditary "disease", even though there is no physiological proof, genetic or otherwise. There is however a clear correlation between the creation of an environment in which a child cannot develop a sense of his or her own identity and schizophrenia. This book seeks to make that correlation blatantly clear.

I would also recommend The Politics of Experience and the Bird of Paradise: AND the Bird of Paradise as a good starting point if you are new to Ronald D Laing's works. It is a good introduction to what is a very insightful way of understanding human psychology and the relationship between what is experienced and the development of the mind.

2.0 out of 5 stars point, 4 Jul 2009
I found the book gloomy and was glad to finish it, there was a point to the book, but i think its better to think positive and look at the lighter side of life. I was glad when i had finished it.
