Product Description

Product Description

National identity is often cited as a major contributing factor to many of the world's worst trouble spots, for example Palestinians versus Jews in Israel, the troubles in Afghanistan, Kurdistan, Bangladesh, Armenia and Tibet. This book addresses the issue of why national identity is so important. It examines how it differs from racial, ethnic and regional identity and how it originated in both the West and the Third World. The relationship between national identity and language is shown by the author to be important, but crucial to an enduring sense of national identity is religion and it capacity to separate groups of people.

5.0 out of 5 stars It is one of the best books about national identity, 13 Nov 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: A Identidae Nacional (Paperback)
I liked. Smith writes not only definitions on traditional concepts (like nationalism) but also introduces an interesting analysis about ethnonationalism. I do not agree in some coments (like his concept of "lateral ethnic communities"), but it is still a good book. Roberto Remes

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic work on identity., 4 Feb 2010
By Trev Hill (Telford, Shropshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This book is a classic and explores Smith's views on national identity, it's creation and expression. It contests views of other theorists, like Hobsbawm and provides an interesting theory of national Identity being forged through ethnicity. Useful to Social Scientists, Political observers and historians.
