Product Description

Product Description

Three of Benson's Lucia stories. "Queen Lucia" was published in 1920, "Miss Mapp" in 1922 and "Lucia in London" in 1927. They are much-loved novels of provincial snobbery and became a successful television series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent - hilarious, addictive, fascinating, 7 Jun 1999
By A Customer
Once read, EF Benson's 6 books about Lucia and Miss Mapp can never be forgotten. Set in a small town the characters are almost without execption fatally flawed. Despite the characters malevolent obsession with gossip, scandal and one-up-manship it is impossible not to identify with them. One of the only writers that makes me laugh out loud. Everyone who I've forced to read them has loved them.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gem, 5 Aug 2002
By A Customer
After waiting far too long after a friends recommendation, I borrowed Lucia Rising from the library, swiftly followed by the accompanying Lucia Vitrix. Ever since I have been searching for copies to own myself, and fear the day these gems may go out of print! Lucia, Mapp and dear Georgino are vividly realistic, and absolutely delicious characters, made up of elements we can recognise in ourselves (reluctantly!) and our neighbours even today. It seems an inaccuracy to term these novels "light fiction" - the comedy is beautifully constructed, and is just as satisfying a second time around. Here's looking forward to the third!

5.0 out of 5 stars Molto Bene, 22 Oct 2000
By A Customer
About ten years ago a friend, in a postcard, suggested that if I was short of something to read I should pick up a copy of Queen Lucia. I ignored his advice at the time, until the aforementioned postcard was discovered at the bottom of a box under the bed several months ago. So began a love affair with one of the most enjoyable and entertaining series of books I've read. From Daisy Quantock's guru to Diva Plaistow's sardine tartlets (an eighteenpenny tea for me, I think) every chapter is a gem. At the end of 'Trouble For Lucia' - the last of the series - it was quite painful having to say 'au reservoir' to the most scheming, snobbish, shallow, narrow-minded, tarsome, adorable bunch of friends that I have ever had the pleasure of sitting down to a nice rubber of bridge with.

Nothing more to say. These novels are a joy from beginning to end. If you are a fan of P.G.Wodehouse (and if you're not, you should be), then you'll adore these.
