5.0 out of 5 stars A true lost classic of the blockbuster genre., 24 Dec 2008
By MAB (London, UK) - See all my reviews
The 1980s bought us wonderful things such as the shoulder pad, big hair and a whole plethora of glossy steamy trashy blockbuster novels such as Lace, Chances, Polo and Pearls which seemed to sell by the truck load.

But wait, Pearls, you say? But I've never heard of it! And indeed it's sad to say that although Conran's Lace, Collins' Chances and Cooper's Polo are highly regarded as the pinnacles of the blockbuster genre, Pearls by Celia Brayfield has been all but forgotten.

When I was a teenager I read an awful lot of books I probably wasn't meant to read, Pearls was one of them and upon second reading I have to say it was probably the least of my sins!

Telling the story of the Bourton sisters, Catherine and Monty, Pearls starts with a mystery. Both sisters awaken one morning to discover a priceless pearl under their pillows and so begins a journey which will take them into the dark and murky past of their father James Bourton a likeable if fool hardy second son of aristocracy who becomes a decorated war hero and eventually a failed business man. Along the way the sisters will discover love and heart ache, fight addictions and overcome all manner of obstacles to discover the truth of who they are and where the pearls actually came from and why they were given them.

As trash goes Pearls is well above average in the writing stakes with an intelligence and an historical accuracy missing from most standards of the genre. The characters are likable and three dimensional with lots of human qualities. The mystery is gripping and sucks the reader in from the outset. And although when I first read it I was confused by the fact that the chapters jump back and forth in time rather a lot, upon second reading this only added to the unfolding mystery. If I were to have one criticism it would be that I felt the end was slightly rushed.

The fifteen year old me loved this book when he read it. And I`m very happy to say that the now thirty five year old me still loves this book even all these years later.

In my mind Pearls should be up there with Conran's Lace as a true classic of the blockbuster genre.

Read it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A pleasure to re-read!!, 31 Jul 2008
By Mrs. C. Smith "msmith132" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I read this originally on my first 'girls' holiday in 1988 and really enjoyed it!!

I have of late been revisiting some books that I read years ago not only for nostalgia's sake, but to see if they were as good second time around.

This book really was, and stands up well against the test of time.

It is a story of two sisters, both very different who are involved in the same mystery. Even second time around it was gripping!!
