3.0 out of 5 stars the family that slays together..., 3 Oct 2001
By pearsoncl@hotmail.com (London, England) - See all my reviews
This is the first Allingham thriller I've read, and I was pleasantly surprised. Its strengths are an exceptionally complex mystery, strong characterisation and, especially, a gradually increasing sense of nastiness -- it starts as a fairly traditional English country house mystery and steadily becomes more sinister with further killing, the mysterious appearance of symbols and the possibility of a semi-human participant. Its disadvantages lie also in the complexity of the mystery, which is so complex that it ironically made this the first whodunnit I worked out before the end, and the somewhat strained humour, especially of the detective, Albert Campion (whose characterisation didn't quite work for me). I was also disappointed by Allingham's u-turn on what initially seemed to me to be an indictment of the insularity of the English middle-classes, but the innate conservatism of the genre may have forced her into that (there's also some dated racism to allow for this, which is shocking, although revealing of the times). Generally recommended, though, and I will be reading more Allingham in the future.
