Hartley creates an engaging, though simple, story of a hired driver and a rich widow becoming close before tragedy strikes. This book was written after the amazing Go-Between and is far simpler and emotion based than its predecessor. Although there is little action until the last quarter and it is mostly narrative and description lead its bittersweet ending will leave you glad you have read it. The Hireling is a great book for seeing how people cope with losing love... and finding it again. Not a huge page-burner but a finely honed commentary on society and love in the 1950's.

Although there is little action untill the last quarter and it is mostly narrative and description lead it's bitter-sweet ending will leave you glad you have read it. The Hireling is a great book for seeing how people cope with losing love... and finding it agian. Not a huge page-burner but a finely honed comentry on society and love in the 1950's.
