This tells of the lives and struggles of eight early reformers of the position of women in society. These courageous women were mocked, opposed, sexually insulted, publicly vilified and widely opposed for desiring higher education and the vote.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting women, 20 Nov 2002
By A Customer
Forster's series of mini-biographies is interesting in the choice of her 'Significant Sisters' and their diverse and controversial contribution to the feminist movement. Of the women chosen, the minority saw their work as part of any womens' liberation force, and the majority certainly did not describe themselves as feminists. This book is a facinating foray into how the conglomerate 'feminist movement' reaches across diverse categories of women's lives - sexual freedom, freedom from oppression in prostitution, freedom to pursue careers, to become educated. Each Sister's motivations are different, their reasons for becoming active vary enormously. Forster's views are not radical feminist, and those of her subjects are sometimes even hostile to the feminist movement. This is what makes them fascinating characters.

Read this as an exploration of a corner of women's collective history of liberation, or as a collection of historical biographies, or simply for inspiration to go and make a difference to the world by championing a cause.
