Product Description

Product Description

Clare Paling has had to move to a drowsy village because of her successful husband's job. She finds it hard to fit into the small, closed community. It takes her involvement in the church's 4th century pageant and an unpardonable death to remind Clare that the world is an uncertain place.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well-written and moving, 11 April 2003
By Booklover (England) - See all my reviews
This is a sympathetic, gentle and quintessentially English book, which draws the reader in to the feelings and histories of the people of Laddenham immediately. Penelope Lively's poetic prose is a joy to read, and as usual there are themes running through the book: omnipresent History, appearance and reality - in this case, a physically beautiful and yet haphazardly cruel world.

I found the end of the book genuinely moving, but despite that (I usually prefer a cheerful read) I would recommend it. I give it 4 stars, reserving the 5-star accolade for Lively's superlative children's book, "The Ghost of Thomas Kempe".
